Why I study Japanese
Well, the initial reason is that it is a requirement--I have to pass third year Japanese for my school requirements. But I also have other reasons for learning Japanese. First, I want to appreciate the culture. Second, I have many Japanese friends that I met in South Korea whom I would like to speak with in their native language as well as Korean. Finally, I study Korean literature of the colonial period, and many famous Korean writers studied in Japan, were influenced by Japanese ideas, and even wrote in Japanese. Japanese would hopefully open up this part of Korean literature to me as well. I'm sure that the more I study Japanese, the more reasons I'll find to keep studying it.
